Healthy China Fruit Powder (to go with oranges)

Jun 19, 2025

I don't know if it is a thing anywhere else in the world, but here in South Africa, pairing china fruit (a kind of dried sweet/salty prune sweet) witih oranges is popular (mostly among the South African Indian population).

The flavours take me back to my childhood. My two brothers and I used to cut the oranges in half and then stick a red or white china fruit into the middle of each half. Squeezing the half would release the delicious china fruit flavoured orange juice, and we'd dig into them without cutting the oranges any further. It was impossible to eat those halves without the juices dribbling down your chin.

Later on I discovered another way of eating oranges and china fruit - you could sprinkle china fruit powder over slices of oranges. A much more elegant way of eating.

My mom recently came up with a way of creating a powder that tastes exactly like china fruit when sprinkled over orange slices, except that her powder contains no sugar or preservatives (or whatever other questionable ingredients that make up traditional china fruit). I now make a huge batch and keep it in my pantry for the citrus season, happy that there is a tayib (healthier) way of enjoying these flavours.

Here's the recipe for you to try:

HEALTHY CHINA FRUIT POWDER

  • 2 teaspoons stevia powder
  • 2 teaspoons pink Himalayan salt
  • 8 teaspoons jeeru (ground cumin powder)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Simply mix all of the above together and enjoy.

If you've made this recipe, drop a comment below and let me know what you think about the flavour combination when it is sprinkled on oranges!
